Brian Setzer was among the invitation-only crowd that attended an intimate performance by Jeff Beck honoring his late friend and mentor, Les Paul. The show last week was held at Beck’s favorite dive, the Iridium Jazz Club.

Beck was backed by the Irish rockabilly quartet The Imelda May Band, but Setzer also came out to sing during two songs and the finale.

Other audience members were a who’s who of guitar aficianados, including Kirk Hammett of Metallica, Meat Loaf, and Little Steven Van Zandt. Van Zandt gushed about the concert, “The best show I ever seen in my life. I’m not kidding. Absolutely phenomenal.” High praise indeed!

Les Paul died at the age of 94 on August 12, 2009, from complications arising from pneumonia. He was a guitar legend in jazz, country and blues, and pioneered the development of the solid-body electric guitar as well as numerous sound recording innovations. It is entirely fair to say that he made the rock and roll sound possible.

Setzer was rushed to a local hospital, and then treated for what was apparently a combination of dehydration, high altitude and vertigo. He responded well and was released and back to performing within 48 hours.

The remainder of the tour will go on as scheduled, and Setzer is feeling just fine!

Brian Setzer may be prepping for his upcoming tour of his Christmas music, but it’s new album, Songs From Lonely Avenue, that’s currently on his mind.

Setzer says it all started with some guitar riffs that sounded dark and cool and reminded him of the soundtracks to some of his favorite black-and-white movies from the ’40s and ’50s. The sound evolved into his latest CD, which combines rockabilly, jazz, and swing, with musical arrangements and big band sound provided by legendary composer and arranger, Frank Comstock.

Comstock has roots in old style Hollywood, having worked with bandleader Les Brown, singer Doris Day, and TV credits that include “Adam-12″ and “Dragnet.” He previously collaborated with Setzer on his 2007 release Wolfgang’s Big Night Out.

Songs From Lonely Avenue releases today from Surfdog Records and can also be found on vinyl and as a digital download. Singles include “King of the Whole Damn World” and “Trouble Train.”

It’s Christmas in July - Brian Setzer is planning his holiday extravaganza, which includes 25 stops throughout the country, kicking off November 20th in Detroit, MI.

The swing-pop star will travel the Midwest and down the East Coast late in November and early December, with plans to travel westward via the South, finishing things up with a number of West Coast stops - including five in California and a final stop at the Snoqualmie Casino in Washington on December 29th.

Setzer, who gained mainstream fame with his hit single “Jump Jive and Wail,” turned his attention to holiday tunes after 2002’s Boogie Woogie Christmas and 2005’s Dig that Crazy Christmas. In 2008, he released The Ultimate Christmas Collection.

Setzer and his 18-piece orchestra’s last studio album was Wolfgang’s Big Night Out, which highlights the work of legendary composers such as Mozart, Beethover, Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn - with his twist, of course. The album garnered a Grammy Award nomination for Best Classical Crossover Album.

Check out the holiday dates below!
